On the 22th of November, Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency (MIEMA) took part in the conference Financing energy efficiency in Malta and Italy. The event was organized by the European Commission in partnership with the UN Environment Finance Initiative, the Ministry for Energy and Water Management of Malta and the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects of Malta.
The event aimed at sharing best practices from Malta and Italy, as well as further countries on how energy efficiency investments can be financed. This includes the use of innovative financing instruments, notably in the building and industry sector.
Eng Diane Cassar of MIEMA was invited to give a presentation in a specific panel discussion focused on the renovation of public buildings. The presentation, entitled “Finance for energy efficiency measures in Maltese public buildings”, tackled the challenges related to using different sources and strategies for financing energy refurbishment projects of public buildings, as for instance the introduction of EPC contracts. The project STEPPING was presented during the speech together with the pilot studies that MIEMA is carrying out in the Maltese territory in connection with the project.
During the same panel, other two speakers shared experiences on the same topic. Mr Dario di Santo of FIRE (Italy) gave a in-depth analysis of successful EPC projects in Italy, while Mr Norman Zammit, President of the Chamber of Engineers of Malta, presented how to develop a market for ESCOs in Malta. The panel of discussion concluded with a lively debate on approaches and strategies for funding renovation of public buildings. Different stakeholders from the audience also participated and contributed positively to the discussion.
